Shallow water fish finder performance

General

Question

When using my depth sounder in about 5 ft of water, it doesn't seem to work. It does not seem to be able to find the bottom.  What could be wrong?

Solution

Most likely you are in "auto fishing" or auto cruising" mode. We have found that when in shallow water, the best choice is to switch to manual mode and set your gain accordingly.  As you go into deeper water, you can then shift to one of the auto modes.  When returning to the shallow water, go back to the manual mode.  The unit will "remember" the settings you left it in and you will be able to see the bottom in these depths.
