Approximatly how high should I mount a radar dome on my sailboat mast.
There is not a magic number that covers every install. In general terms stern pole or backstay mounting is always best. When you mount on the mast you must consider the rigging and windage interfering with air flow to the sails. Mounting on the mast also makes it more difficult for installation and servicing. The mast does offer more height, which can help see targets sooner over the horizon. This debate is one that has gone one since the first radar install on Sailboats. If mounting on the mast I would say roughly between 20 and 45 feet where it can be mounted without causing problems with your sails. The higher you go the sooner you see over the horizon targets. The lower the better you will pick up items very close to the boat.
