Camas, WA, November 12 2018 - Amid much fanfare, Honolulu-based ocean cargo transportation firm Matson, Inc. recently christened the largest container vessel ever built in the United States, the Daniel K. Inouye. Built at Philly Shipyard in Pennsylvania, the 48,409 metric ton, 850-foot Aloha Class vessel is the first of two commissioned from Philly Shipyard by Matson, and the first of four new ships that will be put into service over the next two years.

Furuno is excited to announce that a fully integrated Furuno navigation system was selected for fitting on the Daniel K. Inouye. Furuno's Radars keep its all-American crew aware of their surroundings and informed of all vessel traffic within range. The completely integrated suite of electronics includes an FAR2827 Radar, FAR3320 and FAR3330S Chart Radars and four FMD3300 ECDIS systems including Alert management and Track Control capabilities. Multiple Furuno sensors feed essential data to the system, including dual GP170D GPS Navigators, FA170 AIS, GS100 3-Axis Speed Sensor/backup Transmit Heading Device, and an NX700P Navtex. Multiple Furuno VHF and MF/HF Radiotelephones with integrated DSC compliment the two complete FELCOM suites, ensuring constant, reliable communications are always available. The FE800 IMO Navigation Echo Sounder, DS60 3-axis Doppler Sonar, and GS100 Satellite Speed Log ensure safe travels and efficient docking maneuvers are achieved. Furuno's BR500 Bridge Alarm System and VR7000 Voyage Data Recorder are connected to the entire suite to monitor the Watch Officer's presence and deliver hassle-free retrieval and playback of crucial data.

The Daniel K. Inouye is designed to deliver cargo between Hawaii and west coast continental US ports of Seattle, Oakland and Long Beach. As the fastest vessel of Matson fleet with a top speed of nearly 24 knots, the Daniel K. Inouye utilizes dual-fuel engines that can be adapted to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG). It also features a fuel efficient hull design, making it one of the most effective and environmentally sound vessels ever constructed in the nation.

Born on September 7, 1924, Senator Daniel K. Inouye was one of the longest-serving U.S. Senators in history. He received a number of military decorations for his service in World War II, including the nation's highest military award, the Medal of Honor. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1962 as Hawaii's first member of the House of Representatives, he was also distinguished as the nation's first Japanese-American to serve in that capacity. For 50 years, Senator Inouye was a fierce advocate for the American maritime industry. A number of maritime institutions honor Senator Inouye by bearing his name, including a new Arleigh Burke-class destroyer commissioned by the US Navy, the USS Daniel Inouye (DDG118), her keel laid only last May by General Dynamics Bath Ironworks.
